AH Radio #37: Rebecca DeRossett - Why Working Out Doesn't Have to Suck, Part 2

 <itunes:author>Anytime Health</itunes:author>

Rebecca DeRossett is owner of Stillwater Psychological Associates and has been in private practice for the past 16 years. She works with couples, families, and adolescents. She specializes in trauma and the impact it has on personality development. When not working, she loves to be outdoors, especially in the mountains. Rebecca loves skiing, mountain-biking, and anything high altitude.

Rebecca tells readers how much and how often we should workout to ensure the best results. Boredom is one of the biggest reasons people stop exercising, so cross training is just one way to prevent boredom from setting in in the first place. The most challenging part of the journey will be to transform your brain from a sabotaging bully into a goalachieving friend.

Rebecca uses intimate storytelling to capture the neurological science behind a particular behavior; all while inspiring the reader to believe change is possible. She helps build a road map or a “how-to-guide” with practical steps on how to break bad habits, the importance of “moving a muscle, to move a feeling,” finding a support system, and defining a personal vision.

AH Radio #36: Chuck Runyon - Why Working Out Doesn't Have to Suck

 <itunes:author>Anytime Health</itunes:author>

Part one in a three-part series.

As founder and CEO of Anytime Fitness, Chuck Runyon has been instrumental in the development of the world's largest co-ed fitness franchise, earning a reputation in the industry for his creativity and innovation.

An original fitness rebel himself, Chuck doesn't hesitate to look you straight in the eye and confirm what you already know: Working Out Sucks. Committed to changing the way people relate to the fitness industry (and the way the fitness industry relates to people), Chuck aims to reach all the sweat haters, excuse makers, and busy people who hate working out. How's he going to do it? By starting a new conversation about fitness. That means less talk about treadmills and tight abs, and more talk about living an outrageously fun and fully engaged life that is improved by your physical condition, instead of limited by it.

Working Out Sucks offers a no-B.S. way to get back on track for those of us who have been hindered, hampered and brainwashed by unhealthy habits, destructive attitudes and misinformation about health and exercise. Don't expect this to be just another book about fitting in a teeny bikini or having bulging biceps. Working Out Sucks is a lifestyle guide for the excuse-makers and sweat-haters who think working out sucks.

The authors take on fitness and health from a new perspective that is about so much more than musclemen and mirrors, tight abs and treadmills. They believe health and fitness are about living an outrageously fun and fully engaged life—where your physical condition has the power to improve your life instead of limiting it.

100% of the book’s proceeds go to Limbs for Life—a nonprofit organization that provides fully functional prosthetic care to individuals who can’t afford it.

AH Radio #33: Kevin Sorbo - From Hercules to mere mortal.

 <itunes:author>Anytime Health</itunes:author>

On television, as the star of the popular Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Kevin Sorbo portrayed an invincible demigod. He relished living the part—putting in 14-hour days on set, doing his own stunts, and relentlessly working out at the gym. Until one day it all came to an abrupt end.

Now, for the first time, Sorbo shares what viewers didn’t know: he suffered three strokes from an aneurysm in his shoulder that had been radiating blood clots throughout his body, likely for months. He was left partially blind and entirely incapacitated at just thirty-eight years old.

Appearances are everything in Hollywood, so Sorbo and the production studio hid the full details of his condition from the media. After all, how could the strongest man in the world be…fragile? To continue filming Hercules, the number-one worldwide syndicated TV series at the time, they frantically reworked scripts and revamped production to allow for the star’s severely limited involvement. But as the effects of the strokes persisted—with painful, mysterious, debilitating symptoms—and physicians could offer few answers, Sorbo grew increasingly despondent.

What happens when your entire identity vanishes? True Strength is the story of how one man faced the unimaginable and ultimately found the real measure of success. With tongue-in-cheek humor and an unfailingly candid voice, Sorbo reflects on his childhood in Minnesota, his early modeling and acting days, and his hard-charging charmed life in television. He recounts the onset of his stroke symptoms, the frightening hospitalizations, his battle with depression, and fighting for a recovery that defied medical expectations. <itunes:subtitle>In his new book, "True Strength," Kevin Sorbo shares the story his fans didn't know… That he had suffered three strokes due to an aneurysm in his shoulder which left him partially blind and incapacitated. At age 38.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>On television, as the star of the popular Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Kevin Sorbo portrayed an invincible demigod.

And how through it all, love conspired to save him from missing out on what matters.

With this refreshingly honest account of celebrity, personal tragedy, and the power of letting go, Sorbo aims to blaze a trail for anyone who may have suffered a serious setback in life and is struggling to find their way forward.</itunes:summary>

AH Radio #31: Sara Snow - The impact of natural living.

 <itunes:author>Anytime Health</itunes:author>

Sara Snow has been called “first generation organic”, and “green living’s real deal” and it’s easy to see why. Raised in the countryside outside Ann Arbor, Michigan, surrounded by organic gardens, solar panels and compost heaps, Sara enjoyed the benefits of one of the most fresh-oriented areas in the country and a family with a propensity toward and infectious passion for eco living.

Sara's parents were pioneers as the natural foods movement was just beginning. They studied macrobiotics, started a natural foods deli and made the decision to move their family from the city to live off the land in a cleaner environment. While other youngsters were chasing down their Sugar Smacks with cow's milk, Sara was sipping soymilk, munching on carob bars and dining on brown rice balls with nori (seaweed). Sara played in organic cotton t-shirts, washed her hair with natural jojoba shampoos and, at first sign of a rash or a sniffle, was treated with herbs and natural medicine. From her first years, Sara was schooled in the way of organic foods and natural living and her dad, Tim Redmond, lead by example, co-founding some of the heaviest hitters in the world of organics; Eden Foods, American Soy Products, and Blue Horizon Organic Seafood Co.

Snow continued to study natural living as an adult and was fortunate to see health as a constant companion. She began work in television and quickly gained some success, earning two national Emmy Awards as a producer for national cable documentaries; then going on to become an award winning news reporter and anchor. But after three years of working on an early morning news program, Snow’s health began to take a nosedive. With the stress and lack of sleep inherent in her role on daily news, her natural foods and healthy home environment were suddenly not enough. So Snow stepped back, spent some meditative and rejuvenative time with her husband, Ryan, and their dog Makana, and went back to her roots, creating the concept for a TV series with practical advice on living green.

Sara soon became creator and host of the Discovery Home primetime series, Living Fresh, cited in the media as the “first green television program in the country.” She followed that up with a fresher, hipper series, Get Fresh with Sara Snow, for Discovery Health. Millions of viewers have tuned in week after week for both series as they aired across multiple networks in the Discovery Networks family. With much anticipation, Sara’s first book, Sara Snow’s Fresh Living; The Essential Room-by-Room Guide to a Greener, Healthier Family and Home, will release in the Spring of 2009. It is already being heralded as “A fabulous book…practical, affirming and fresh” and “A must read for every family searching for a greener footprint.”

Each week Snow speaks to millions more through her featured segment Living Green on CNN.com LIVE, her regular column Green Eyes On on the environmental site Treehugger.com, through her own blog and as a featured speaker at events across the country, speaking on topics from the science behind organics, sustainable messaging for green businesses, to the simple steps everyday people can take to live a greener, healthier life. Sara and her work have been highlighted in publications including The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, FoxNews.com, Harper’s Bazaar, Health, Woman’s Day, Better Homes and Gardens, Lucky, and Natural Health magazines.

Sara is a member of the Board of Directors for The Organic Center and on the Board of Advisors for Discovery’s newest 24-hour green lifestyle network, Planet Green.

Today Sara is living proof that green has gone mainstream. In recent years, sales of natural and organic products has become a multi-billion dollar industry, with more than half of all U.S. consumers buying organic products at least occasionally. Snow was and still is its cheerleader, and she’s waving the flag of green living for all to see.

AH Radio #29: Gloria Gaynor - Musical performer and osteoarthritis sufferer.

 <itunes:author>Anytime Health</itunes:author>

Gloria Gaynor was no stranger to knee pain. In 1985, she had arthroscopic surgery on her left knee. Then, in 2006, she had it totally replaced. But her right knee had been hurting, too, for quite some time. It hurt going up and down stairs and she couldn’t stand on it for more than a few minutes, or keep it bent without unbearable pain. "I used to do all those disco moves, where I went down to the floor and back up—all while wearing 3-inch heels. My doctor told me that’s more than my knees should take. I guess you could say I gave my knees to disco."

Gloria's primary care physician referred her to an orthopedic surgeon for the increasing pain in her right knee. He diagnosed her with osteoarthritis of the knee, which shocked Gloria. "I thought arthritis happens only to older people—I was only 41!"

Disco is all about driving rhythms and energy. And her fans had come to expect a certain level of performance from Gloria. "When I have to reconsider every move, it can really compromise my work. I was concerned about how this new diagnosis was going to affect my career. I tried everything from ice packs to over-the-counter pain medicines to help my OA knee pain. I wasn’t feeling enough relief, so my doctor suggested hyaluronic acid (HA) treatment, and gave me Synvisc®. I received my first injection and then flew to Moscow for a performance. Over the next day or so, my knee became incredibly swollen. I was in so much pain that I couldn’t even manage to descend the stairs to the stage. After the show, I flew right back to New York where I was immediately admitted into the hospital to wash out the Synvisc® from my knee.

"I learned that, unfortunately, I had experienced an effusion reaction, a possible but infrequent side effect of most HA treatments. I was still in pain, though, and had heard good things, overall, about HA therapy. My friend recommended Euflexxa® because his doctor said Euflexxa®, unlike Synvisc®, had very few reports of these reactions and that it helps relieve OA knee pain. I decided to give it a go. It’s been three months now and I feel great! I can exercise, sit with my knees bent, and most importantly, dance and perform with little pain. I am so grateful for Euflexxa®!"

AHRadio #24: Todd Patkin - Six simple things you can do this summer to let the sunshine in.

 <itunes:author>Anytime Health</itunes:author>

It's Time to Change the Way You Look at the World.

Are you really happy? We would all love to be able to answer with an enthusiastic yes. But if you're like most people, your honest response would have to be "some of the time" at best, and more likely "no, not really."

Yes, too many of us endure lives filled with regrets and low self-esteem. We are bored, disinterested, and often terribly on edge. Some of us are even chronically anxious and depressed! And this is true even if nothing appears to be "wrong" in our lives—even if, in fact, everything appears to be just right.

Todd Patkin knows firsthand it doesn't have to be this way. From a childhood riddled with insecurity and perfectionism to an adulthood marked by the exhaustive need to always excel and achieve more to a devastating breakdown at the age of thirty-six, "Finding Happiness: One Man's Quest to Beat Depression and Anxiety and—Finally—Let the Sunshine In" chronicles Todd's very difficult but ultimately successful journey toward cracking the happiness code.

As Todd's engaging and unusual story reveals, real happiness isn't measured by what your life looks like, but by how you look at your life. If your current view isn't what you'd like it to be, Finding Happiness can help you bring everything into focus. Not only does Todd share his own hard-won insights, he ends the book by giving readers the step-by-step tools they need to build their best and happiest lives.

AH Radio #23: Vince Del Monte - Smart foods to bring your body back to life.

 <itunes:author>Anytime Health</itunes:author>

Meet Vince Del Monte—the fitness guru who has been coined "The Skinny Guy Savior." He earned this name by dedicating his life to transforming the lives of skinny guys and girls, helping them become healthier, fitter, and more confident in their bodies. In the end, his students transform themselves to "live, look, and know better!” Vince has transformed thousands of lives with a perfect mix of encouragement, humor, inspiration, and fun with his popular best selling “No-Nonsense Muscle Building” system.

As a teenager, Vince was 140-150 pounds at 6 feet tall and became known as “Skinny Vinny.” The nickname didn’t die—it stuck with him all through college. He tried everything to gain weight any way he could, never getting past 149 lbs. He went through battles to gain weight like no other. As a former competitive long distance runner, Vince used running to survive the embarrassment and insecurity he suffered from being too skinny. He formed an identity for himself as one of those lean, mean, running machines.

Vince studied kinesiology and received an Honors Kinesiology degree from the University of Western Ontario. After college, he found a mentor that instructed him “to burn all of his fitness magazines and stop wasting money on supplements to gain weight” and Vince’s life started to change.

Now, he helps thousands of individuals with “muscle unfriendly genetics” make a plan to create new habits and commit to them. He helps with motivation, confidence, and teaches the basis for training smarter not harder. Individuals see muscles within two weeks, not two months! They eat better and have a more balance life. And, in the end, each individual becomes a better person while reaching their goals.

Vince is the Author of “No-Nonsense Muscle Building: Skinny Guy Secrets To Insane Muscle Gain.” The book has sold more than 80,000 copies in more than 120 different countries. He is also a WBFF Professional Fitness Model.

Vince continues to compete in the fitness-modeling world and has won the Canadian Fitness Model Championships. In June 2008, he competed again and placed 3rd at the World Fitness Model Championships. He enjoys the natural bodybuilding and fitness lifestyle, and continues to practice what he preaches.

***About Linda Watson:

I'm the cook and researcher who started Cook for Good in the summer of 2007. I'm a home cook with a well-developed sense of curiosity, but I'm not a nutritionist or chef. I may be the only person in the world who is a member of both the International Association of Culinary Professionals and the Project Management Institute. My background in project management and procedures writing helps me write and test recipes and optimize the shopping lists and cooking plans. Da Capo Press is publishing my book Wildly Affordable Organic: Eat Fabulous Food, Get Healthy, and Save the Planet—all on $5 a Day or Less.

I teach classes at a wide range of venues, from the Share Our Strength's national Conference of Leaders to private salons, from Whole Foods to food banks, from Slow Food groups and co-ops to colleges and clinics. I give cooking demonstrations at farmers' markets and speak to groups who are interested in cooking great food, controlling expenses, losing weight, raising healthy children, fighting hunger, or reducing their impact on the planet. The exciting part about the Cook for Good lifestyle is that you can focus on one of those goals and create lots of other goodness as side effects.

I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, with my husband Bruce. I've had an odd but thrilling career so far, including developing a top-secret expert system for the Institute for Defense Analyses, working with Tom Clancy and Douglas Adams on computer games, riding the dot-com wave with Egarden.com, and being the director of my county political party and the Raleigh Independent Business Alliance. As Garrison Keillor says, you can do anything with an English degree!

AH Radio #20: Marshall Ulrich - The Endurance King shares his tips and motivation for long-distance running.

 <itunes:author>Anytime Health</itunes:author>

3,063 Miles. 52 Days. 57 Years Old.

In fall 2008, Marshall Ulrich completed the mind-bending and body-breaking equivalent of 117 back-to-back marathons as he ran an average of more than 400 miles a week, and climbed 84,430 feet, in temperatures ranging from below freezing to the upper 90s. He crossed 3,063.2 miles and 12 states on foot from California to New York.

Yet his new memoir, Running on Empty, is about more than this one contest, a single sport, or an individual athlete:

This deeply personal story explains what drives the extreme athlete, what compels the endurance kings and queens to keep going no matter what. The book reveals unexpected rewards and intense competition, exploring the effects of rivalry, trash-talking, and an uncompromising will to win. It spotlights the history of ultrarunning, showing how this elite sport lays claim to a nearly unmatched egalitarian past. Running on Empty pays a surprising tribute to the power of friendship and love, which turn out to be even more important than self-reliance when you’re serious about endurance.

This is also about defying the age barrier. It wasn’t until his thirties, after a devastating personal loss, that Marshall discovered his talent for ultrarunning. In his forties, he became an innovator in the sport and then diversified by adventure racing. As he entered his fifties, Trail Runner magazine called him one of the legends of the trail, Outside crowned him “Endurance King,” and Adventure Sports highlighted him as an athlete “Over Fifty and Kicking Your Butt.” Then he started climbing mountains and went up all Seven Summits, including Mount Everest, in his fifties.

And then, at age 57, Marshall Ulrich made an attempt on a world record set by a 28 year old. Ultimately, he set two trancontinental speed records of his own.

Drawing on these and other extreme life experiences, the message of the book and the metaphor of the run are universal, whether you’re an athlete or not. It’s about facing forward and taking the next step, not flinching when the road gets rough or you miss a turn, and finding another way when the bridge you planned to cross has collapsed. It’s about doing what you say you’ll do and not letting anything or anyone stop your progress. Ultimately, it’s about facing the toughest challenges, enduring crushing setbacks, and finding fulfillment in something greater than achievement.

Ultimately, it’s about facing the toughest challenges, enduring crushing setbacks, and finding fulfillment in something greater than achievement.</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:author>Anytime Health</itunes:author>

Back in 1998, Dr. Life was sixty years old and a stereotype of the aging man: he was overweight with a noticeable gut and little muscle tone. Even though his own medical practice was thriving, and he thought he knew everything about men’s health, the facts proved differently. His libido was low, which was ruining his self-esteem. He felt tired all the time, yet no amount of sleep made him feel well rested. It wasn’t until a cardiologist read him the riot act that he even considered that change was possible. He then decided to make critical adjustments to his diet and lifestyle, and the results have been nothing short of astounding.

More than a decade later, Dr. Life continues to look and feel younger than ever. He knows that if he can make these changes to his body, his sex life, and his health, any man can. In his revolutionary book, "The
Life Plan," he’ll show how you can turn around your health by using the very same program he successfully created and follows to this day.

The official strength and conditioning coach for Lance Armstrong, Peter Park is a former world-class triathlete and ultra runner, and the current coach to numerous high profile athletes and personalities, including surfing champion Kelly Slater, the L.A. Lakers, the U.S.A. Cycling Team, Matthew McConaughy, and Rob Lowe.

Dr. Eric Goodman brings innovation to the Health and Fitness community. In creating Foundation exercises he found a way to successfully manage and prevent common injuries while creating accountability in clients of all types. After establishing a career training professional and Olympic athletes using Foundation principles, Dr. Goodman is now introducing his ideas to the public.

Goodman and Park have merged their passion, knowledge and experience to offer what has become the highest level of conditioning possible. They have created a full regimen based on Foundation Training that will help to eliminate longstanding, chronic pain, often when nothing else has worked. Their program does not treat injuries.
AH Radio: Patricia Stephens, CNC - Fibromyalgia survivor and author of "Reversing Chronic Disease: A Journey back to Health."

 <itunes:author>Anytime Health</itunes:author>

Almost to the day of her 40th birthday, Patricia Stephens suddenly became ill.

This active mom (of two equally active boys), worked as a teacher until she eventually became completely disabled.

Unrelenting back, neck and jaw pain made her life almost unbearable. She underwent three operations to stop the pain, including surgery to restructure her upper and lower jaws, but it didn't help, so she ate soft foods for seven years. She had significant brain fog to the point that she could not remember lessons she had taught for more than 20 years and she could not sleep without medication. Even though she had been very high energy the first 40 years of her life, Stephens reached a point where she could hardly walk across the room.

It took seven years to finally receive the diagnosis of fibromyalgia and even then, the medications she took barely helped and had horrible side effects. Fibromyalgia is considered "incurable".

"Questions kept coming to my mind such as, 'What have the doctors missed?' or 'What is out of balance in my body?' I was ready to start looking outside the box," says Stephens. "If I was going to get well, I was going to have to step up and become my own advocate. No one was more interested in my health than I was. Also, researching was a therapeutic way for me to deal with the misery."

Over time, Stephens replaced her conventional medications with natural therapies and no longer has fibromyalgia symptoms. She became a certified nutritional consultant and has been working at a natural pharmacy for more than 11 years. The lessons she learned from her own journey, research and work with clients inspired her book, Reversing Chronic Disease: A Journey Back to Health.

Stephens earned a BS from the University of Alabama and became a Certified Nutritional Consultant through the American Association of Nutritional Consultants. She taught commercial food preparation in high school for 22 years before becoming ill. She and her husband have been married for over 41 years and have two grown sons.
